Illinois Lottery Mega Millions
The Illinois Lottery is 1 of 46 US State Lotteries & District Lotteries that offer the Mega Millions game – in this case the Illinois Mega Millions – as part of its overall portfolio of lottery games.
The Mega Millions is a Multi-State USA Lottery that is run and operated by the Mega Millions Consortium – who administer and syndicate the game across the USA and is one of the largest lottery games in the world – having produced a world record jackpot of US$ 656 MILLION in March 2012. The very first Mega Millions draw took place on May 17th 2002 with 6 USA Lottery companies taking part who were all members of the Mega Millions Consortium.

The IL Lottery Mega Millions was first sold back on May 17th 2002 taking part in the very first Mega Millions draw – as the Illinois Lottery had already been a member of the Big Game Consortium since back on August 31st 1996 – selling the Mega Millions predecessor –the Big Game.
IL Lottery Mega Millions – How it Works
The IL Lottery Mega Millions works in exactly the same way as the Mega Millions game works in all the States and Districts in the US that offer the game.
Jackpots start off at US$ 40 MILLION and ROLLOVER after each draw when the top prize is not won – making for some enormous jackpot figures.
6 numbers are drawn in total for the Illinois Mega Millions Lottery from 2 separate drawing machines – firstly 5 numbers are drawn from 70 white balls and then 1 number (the MEGAball) is drawn from 25 gold balls.
Draws for the IL Lottery Mega Millions take place twice every week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10.00pm CST (11.00pm EST).
In addition to the 6 Mega Millions numbers drawn – a further number is drawn – using a Random Number Generator…the Mega Millions MEGAPLIER number…
MEGAPLIER…
This separate MEGAPLIER prize multiplier number drawn will be either 2, 3, 4 or 5 – and is there to give players of the IL Lottery Mega Millions a chance to increase their winnings on all levels of the prize structure apart from the Mega Millions IL jackpot itself.
With MEGAPLIER – you are able to multiply your winnings on these levels by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – greatly increasing the amount you can walk away with.
If a player matches the 5 main Mega Millions numbers playing with the MEGAPLIER add-on – and a MEGAPLIER number of 5 is drawn – the second tier prize of US$ 1 MILLION would be multiplied by 5x and they could win US$ 5 MILLION.

The aim when you are playing is to correctly select as many of the winning Mega Millions numbers as possible – and as there are a total of 9 different ways in which you can win on the Illinois Lottery Mega Millions – you have a great chance of winning a prize.
There are 4 main ways you can play the Illinois Mega Millions…
1. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 plus your 1 Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
2. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 and use the Quick Pick option to let the computer choose your Mega Ball (gold ball) number for you from 1 to 25 – using its lotto number picker / random number generator.
3. Use the Quick Pick option to let the computer pick your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 using its random number generator – and then pick your own Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.

MEGAPLIER…
For just an extra dollar – you can choose to increase your Illinois Mega Millions Lottery winnings on all levels except for the jackpot itself – by adding the MEGAPLIER option when you are playing the Illinois Mega Millions.
If your chosen IL Lottery Mega Millions numbers match the Mega Millions winning numbers on any of these prize levels – you immediately increase your winnings by either 2, 3, 4 or 5 times – depending on what Mega Millions MEGAPLIER number was drawn.

IL Lottery Mega Millions – Record Jackpots
The biggest jackpot win on the Illinois Mega Millions to date has been the massive US$ 270 MILLION won on January 16th 2015 by Jesus Davila Jr. of Naperville, Illinois.
The 2nd highest has been US$ 218.6 Million won by Merle and Patricia Butler from Red Bud on March 30th 2012.
This was, in fact, one third of the record US$ 656 Million Mega Millions jackpot which was shared with winners from Kansas and Maryland and still stands as the biggest jackpot ever to have been won in the history of the Mega Millions lottery.
The 3rd largest jackpot win in Il Lottery Mega Millions history so far has been the US$ 118 Million won on May 4th 2012 by a lucky ticket in Glenwood, IL.
The 4th biggest win to date on the Illinois Mega Millions has been the amazing US$ 81.5 Million won on December 18th 2007 by the JYS Family Partnership. The win was half the US$ 163 Million jackpot and was shared with a New Jersey Mega Millions winner.
The 5th largest win on the IL Lottery Mega Millions was won by Barbara & George Martinek of Mount Prospect, Illinois on September 27th 2002 when they claimed a US$ 37 Million jackpot on the Mega Milions IL.

IL Lottery Mega Millions – How Prizes are Paid
If you have won an Illinois Lottery Mega Millions jackpot – you will be able to claim your prize as either a cash lump sum or as an annuity payment – you will need to make this life-changing choice within 60 days of the date of your claim.
If you choose the annuity option – your Illinois Mega Millions winnings will be paid to you annually over a 30 year period.
For all prizes on the Mega Millions IL – you will have 365 days from the date of the draw taking place – to make your claim before your Illinois MegaMillions ticket will become invalid.
If your win on the Mega Millions IL is up to US$ 600 – you will be able to claim your winnings at any of the Illinois Lottery retailers.
If you’ve had a win of between US$ 600 to US$ 1 Million on the Illinois Mega Millions Lottery – you will be able to claim your prize by going to any of the Illinois Lottery retailers and validating your ticket – then mailing the claim form in.
If you have won up to US$ 25,000 on the Mega Millions IL – you can also claim your prize by visiting one of the IllinoisLottery prize centers in Chicago, Springfield, Des Plaines, Fairview Heights or Rockford.
