Arizona Lottery

The AZ Lotto is operated by the Arizona government.

It started back in November 1980 and the first lottery tickets went on sale in July 1981. These tickets were scratch-offs called “Scratch It Rich” and were the only tickets available from the Arizona Lottery until 1984 when they launched a jackpot game.

At the time the Arizona State Lottery began, it was the only western US state to have it own lottery.

This state lottery is unique amongst USA lottery games because the citizens of Arizona can vote every few years as to whether the games can continue or not. The last vote took place on 2002 when voters voted in favour of keeping the Arizona State Lottery – the next vote is due to take place around the year 2011.

Arizona is also a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association and includes the Powerball amongst its lottery portfolio.

Its other games include Pick 5, Pick 3, various scratchers and the states’ main jackpot game which we will be looking at in more detail here, “The Pick”….

The Pick – Overview

The Pick is Arizona Lottery’s main game - it started in 1984 and is still going strong.

The Pick jackpots start at $1 million and every time that it is not won it “rolls over” and increases in value.

You can buy your tickets in Arizona for The Pick between the hours of 4am and 12 Midnight every day. On draw days, sales cease from 9.30pm to 9.35 pm after which you can get tickets for the next draw.

The Pick has twice weekly draws which take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at approximately 10.25 pm and you can watch this live on television.

How It Works…

The Pick from the AZ Lotto uses what’s known as a 6/44 matrix which means that when playing The Pick, you need to select 6 numbers from a pool of numbers from 1 to 44 – if you match all 6 numbers drawn then you will be a AZ Lottery jackpot winner.

There are other cash prizes to be won too, if you match either 5 of the numbers drawn, 4 numbers or even just 3.

A Quick Pick facility is available when playing Arizona Lottery games similar to the “Lucky Dip” that is used in the UK National Lottery or Europe’s Euromillions – which means that you can get the computer terminal to select all your AZ lotto numbers for The Pick if you wish.

So, playing the The Pick from Arizona Lotto is simple…just select your own 6 numbers or let the computer generate them automatically for you.

Each entry on the Arizona State Lottery “The Pick” game costs just $1.00.

Each time the jackpot is not won, it “rolls over” to the next draw. So…the jackpot will begin at a value of $1 million and each time there is no jackpot winner it will “rollover” - this feature of the Arizona Lottery results in some very sizeable jackpot amounts.

Who Can Play?

As with most lotteries in the U.S.A., in the past, only citizens living in the State of Arizona were allowed to play in any of the Arizona Lottery games including The Pick and tickets had to be purchased from an authorized lottery ticket retailer based in Arizona.

Now, however, with the very welcome presence of genuine online lottery ticket sales companies such as TheLotter, you are able to pick your Arizona Lottery numbers online and purchase your tickets and it doesn’t matter where in the world you are living.

This is excellent news if you live outside of Arizona and the U.S.A. but you want to buy lottery tickets online for The Pick and guarantee your entry into the next draw or just simply wish to enjoy the convenience of getting your lottery tickets online.

Once you have entered into the The Pick, you are then easily able to check your Arizona Lottery result online to see how you have done and to find out if you have become one of the lucky AZ Lotto winners.

You must be 21 years of age to be eligible to purchase a ticket for any of the Arizona State Lottery games including The Pick.

Some great news here for all USA Lottery players in Arizona...

The Multi State Lottery Association (MUSL) – who administer the POWERBALL game
– and the Mega Millions consortium – who administer the MEGA MILLIONS game
– have entered into an historic cross-sales agreement across the USA. All US Lotteries
that previously sold POWERBALL tickets can now ALSO sell MEGA MILLIONS tickets.

This means that with effect from January 31st 2010 – in addition to the existing
POWERBALL – USA Lottery players in Arizona will now ALSO be able to buy lottery
tickets for the MEGA MILLIONS. You can still buy lottery tickets online, of course,
from anywhere around the world.

Information & Background

When the Arizona State Lottery launched its very first tickets in 1981, all 21.4 million tickets available were sold out within 10 days.

You can check your Arizona lottery numbers by watching the draw live on KNXV ABC 15 in Phoenix, NBC Channel 12, KPNX in Phoenix, KOLD News 13 in Tucson or Univision Arizona at around 10.25 pm each Wednesday and Saturday.

In June 1003, the Arizona State Lottery changed the minimum age that players for its games had to be. The minimum age of 18 was increased to 21 to be eligible to purchase any Arizona Lottery tickets.

What Are The Odds?

The odds of winning on the “The Pick” from the Arizona State Lottery are very reasonable when compared to many of the lotteries out there, especially the Multi-State lotteries.

The chances of winning the jackpot on “The Pick” are 1 in 7.05 million – for these odds you could be one of the AZ lottery jackpot winners.

For one of the prizes on the second level, the odds come in at 1 in 30.9 thousand.

The likelihood of winning a third tier prize comes in at 1 in 669 and for a prize on the fourth tier the odds are reduce right down to just 1 in 42.

The overall odds of you winning any prize on The Pick – from the Arizona Lottery are a very reasonable 1 in just 39.

Record Jackpots…

The largest jackpot ever won on The Pick lottery from Arizona was a whopping $101 million. A great sum for a state lottery.

How Are Jackpots Paid?

As an AZ Lotto jackpot winner, you would have a choice in how you are able to receive your winnings. You could choose to have either a single cash lump sum payment or an annuity prize.

You will need to make the choice as to whether you wish to receive the cash lump sum option or the annuity instalment payments option within 60 days from the date of becoming a AZ lotto jackpot winner.

If you choose to receive your jackpot as an annuity, it would be paid to you by the Arizona State Lottery in equal yearly instalments over a 30 year period.

In terms of value, if you chose to take the cash lump sum payment as an AZ Lottery jackpot winner, you would normally receive approximately 50% of the annuity value that you would be paid in installments.

Claiming Prizes…

The rules with any of the Arizona State Lottery games mean that you need to claim your prize within 180 days of the draw taking place.

If you win a prize of any value up to $100 or in some $599, you will be able to claim your lottery winnings in cash at any AZ Lotto retailer.

For amounts of $600.00 or more, you can claim your prize by completing an Arizona Lotto Winner claim form and either mailing it or taking it to the Phoenix or Tucson offices.

Of course, if you play lottery online with lottery ticket sales agencies such as TheLotter, you will not have to be concerened with any of this as they will take care of everything for you.

How The State Benefits…

Since the Arizona Lottery began in 1981, it has helped to fund many different programs that benefit the welfare of its state citizens, including public health, parks, education, transportation and wildlife preservation.

More than $2 billion has been provided for the above causes. A good percentage of any unclaimed lottery prizes goes towards training volunteers to serve as courtroom advocates for abused, neglected and abandoned children.
