Powerball POWER PLAY
The Powerball POWERPLAY is a feature that applies to the Powerball lottery game that is played right across the United States of America in 44 states plus the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands.
The Powerball POWER PLAY option allows players to multiply their winnings on all levels when playing – except the Powerball jackpot itself.
It is very similar to the multiplier feature – MEGAPLIER – that is used by the Mega Millions Consortium to increase the winnings of the non-jackpot prizes on their Mega Millions game.
The Powerball POWERPLAY multiplier was first introduced to the Powerball game by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) on March 7th 2001.
POWERPLAY – Offered by 44 State Lotteries
All 44 of the State Lotteries and District Lotteries that offer the Powerball game – include the option of playing with the Powerball POWER PLAY feature.
A full list of all these USA Lottery companies that carry the Power Ball POWER PLAY can be found below.
More and more Powerball winners are greatly increasing their non-jackpot winnings by utilising the Power Ball POWER PLAY option when they play Powerball.
POWERPLAY – How It Works…
The Powerball POWERPLAY number is drawn by a random number generator – in addition to the 5 main Powerball numbers and the PowerBall.
You can play Powerball with the POWERPLAY option for just an extra dollar to increase the amount of your winnings on different 8 levels of the Powerball prize structure – every level that is – apart from the jackpot itself.
The Powerball POWER PLAY number is drawn twice every week just before the main Powerball winning numbers and will be either 2, 3, 4 or 5.
This means that when you play Powerball with the Powerball POWERPLAY feature – you are able to multiply your winnings on these levels by either 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – vastly increasing the amount of your win.
For example – if you were to match 4 of the main Powerball winning numbers qualifying for a prize of US$ 100 and a Powerball POWERPLAY number of 2 is drawn – your winnings will immediately be doubled to US$ 200.
Likewise – if you were to match 4 of the main Powerball winning numbers plus the PowerBall and a Powerball POWERPLAY number of 3 is drawn – your US$ 10,000 win will immediately be trebled to US$ 30,000.
POWERPLAY – Gets Even Better…
If you match all 5 of the main Powerball winning numbers your second prize level winnings of US$ 200,000 will automatically be multiplied by 5 no matter what POWERPLAY number has been drawn – increasing your winnings right up to US$ 1 Million.
The Powerball POWER PLAY multiplier for the second tier prize level is not dependent on the POWERPLAY number drawn.
POWERPLAY – Special Promotions…
Almost every year – the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) – give Powerball players a chance to increase their winnings even further when playing with the Powerball POWERPLAY option.
During these special Powerball POWER PLAY promotions – a 10x multiplier is offered – allowing you to increase your winnings on all levels except the jackpot by 10 times!
This means, for example, if you were to match all 5 of the main Powerball winning numbers and the promotional Powerball POWER PLAY number of 10 was drawn – your second tier winnings of US$ 200,000 would automatically be increased 10 times to US$ 2 Million!
The first Powerball POWERPLAY promotion of 10x occurred from March 2nd through to March 29th 2006 and they have taken place every year since (except 2009) either in April or May.
POWERPLAY – Where Is the Number Drawn?
The Powerball POWER PLAY number is drawn twice per week at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida by a random number genarator – just before the main Powerball winning numbers are drawn (from the same location).

POWERPLAY – History…
From when it was first introduced by the MUSL on March 7th 2001 until October 8th 2002 the Powerball POWERPLAY feature could draw a PowerPlay number of either 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – therefore if a 1x was drawn – there would be no multiplication of winnings.
From October 9th 2002 the possibility of the POWERPLAY number being drawn as a 1x was removed.
Originally the Powerball POWERPLAY number was selected using a traditional “wheel” drawing method that used 15 slots with the PowerPlay numbers occupying each slot.
From August 28th 2005 the Powerball POWERPLAY wheel was increased in size to use 16 slots – with each of the 2x, 3x, 4x and 5x multipliers occupying 4 slots a piece. These days the POWERPLAY number is now drawn using a random number generator.
From January 4th 2009 the Powerball POWER PLAY option was enhanced so that any player who matched all 5 of the main Powerball winning numbers and played with the POWERPLAY feature – would win US$ 1 Million cash no matter what POWERPLAY number had been drawn.
POWERPLAY / MEGAPLIER – Differences…
There are 2 main differences between the Powerball POWER PLAY and the Mega Millions MegaPlier features.
Firstly – the Power Ball POWER PLAY feature includes a 5x multiplier – whereas the Mega Millions MegaPlier option does not.
Secondly – the odds for each of the Powerball POWERPLAY possibilities are the same – whereas those with the MegaPlier of Mega Millions are not.
The average increase in winnings over the long-term with the Powerball POWER PLAY number is 3.5x – compared to the average long-term anticipated increase in winnings for the Mega Millions MEGAPLIER which is 3.476x.
